Link It Up: Cool stories in the Movie World!

Here are just 5 of the interesting updates happening in Hollywood/the film world/Oscar circuit at this time. Enjoy!
  • Entertainment Weekly reports that Gravity can add a seal of approval from audiences in addition to the one it earned from critics (98% on Rotten Tomatoes, 96% on Metacritic), as the film made $17.5 million on its opening day. If the film can nab a successful box office story in addition to its critical success, Oscar victory seems inevitable.
  • I've talked about my feelings on the waning Oscar story of "Lee Daniels': The Butler" which opened up back in August to somewhat Oscar friendly reviews, and became one of the box office stories of the season. We always knew Oprah was a lock for Best Supporting Actress, but a competitive Best Actor field left the quiet (but heartfelt and deserving) Forrest Whitaker on the outside looking in. However, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Whitaker will be receiving a tribute at this year's Gotham Awards. Tributes are a very important factor in the Oscar race because it keeps the hopefuls in the public eye, and gives them the chance to win over crowds (and Oscar voters) with their acceptance speeches. It's also a good indicator of who is respected, and how much, in the industry which is a good gauge on likeliness to be nominated. Don't count him out just yet!
  • Guy Lodge of inconention.com offers some very interesting insight into the long shots of the Oscar season, and his personal predictions.
  • Sasha Stone from awardsdaily.com breaks down the Best Actress race, which at this time seems to be between Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock, but reminds us not to discount the unseen Emma Thompson for her work in "Saving Mr. Banks".
  • And finally, Nathaniel Rogers from The Film Experience presents us with director Quentin Tarantino's top 10 for the year (so far). It's not a list I certainly expected from the acclaimed auteur, but makes for an interesting read.
