After being absent from the big screen for a few years, Academy Award winner Natalie Portman is back with a bang.
The actress is in Cannes this week premiering her directorial debut, "A Tale of Love and Darkness". An adaptation of the autobiographical novel by Amos Oz, the film has received moderately positive reviews; Portman (who also stars in the film) has received acclaim but it seems that perhaps the grand scope of the narrative could have been better served by a more seasoned director. Nevertheless, Portman was more warmly received than actor turned director Ryan Gosling was last year, whose film was universally panned at the festival.
In more exciting news, Portman has just landed the lead roles in two pivotal biopics that could have the actress dusting off her awards mantle. First is the Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic, entitled "On The Basis of Sex" which will potentially be directed by Marielle Heller, the director of Sundance breakout hit "The Diary of a Teenage Girl".
Portman is also in talks to star in "Ex-Machina" director Alex Garland's newest sci-fi film. If it's anything like "Ex-Machina" we have a lot to be excited about.
The biggest project, however, is undoubtedly the emerging Jackie Kennedy biopic entitled "Jackie", produced by Portman's "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky and directed by Pablo Lorrain, whose critically acclaimed "No" brought him a lot of attention. The film will focus on the first four days following President Kennedy's assassination, and how the iconic former First Lady dealt with losing her beloved. Production on the film will begin at the end of June, with the budget set at reportedly $15 million.
Needless to say, it's an incredible year for Portman, who still has two Terrance Malick films being released, and the questionable Western "Jane Got A Gun" at the end of the summer.
