Full nomination list (and reactions) below.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role:
- Steve Carrell, "Foxcatcher"
- Benedict Cumberbatch, "The Imitation Game"
- Jake Gyllenhaal, "Nightcrawler"
- Michael Keaton, "Birdman"
- Eddie Redmayne, "Theory of Everything"
Surprised at the exclusion of "Selma's" David Oyelowo, who seemed like such a sure thing given the nature of the role and the film's reception. Though, apparently the film's late premiere date and the fact that many voters reportedly didn't have the chance to see it explains his exclusion. I expect that over the next few months the film will build more steam. As for Gyllenhaal, he really needed this, and I'm glad he made it in because it's well deserved. If anyone is vulnerable, however, I think it's Carrell.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role:
- Jennifer Aniston, "Cake"
- Felicity Jones, "Theory of Everything"
- Julianne Moore, "Still Alice"
- Rosamund Pike, "Gone Girl"
- Reese Witherspoon, "Wild"
That fifth spot is just so tricky... I'm shocked (though relieved) Aniston made it in over usual SAG favorite Hilary Swank; all that campaigning is really paying off I suppose, she's a lock to get a Globe nomination tomorrow due to her star power and their love of stars. Though, when it comes time for Oscar, I truly think Cotillard will sneak in, and I expect her to get some love with the Globes tomorrow too. I thought it was Felicity Jones who was the vulnerable out of the 4 "locks" (Pike, Moore, Jones, Witherspoon) but something tells me Pike should avoid getting comfortable.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role:
- Robert Duvall, "The Judge"
- Ethan Hawke, "Boyhood"
- Edward Norton, "Birdman"
- Mark Ruffalo, "Foxcatcher"
- J.K. Simmons, "Whiplash"
Something tells me Duvall got in on the thinness of this category and SAG's general love for him (remember when they nominated him for "Get Low"?). Expect his name to be absent come Oscar time (I'd swap him out with Tom Wilkinson). Ruffalo is vulnerable too, I think, though he's more of a sure thing than Duvall, but I don't know if "Foxcatcher" truly has what it takes to make it to the Oscars anymore.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role:
- Patricia Arquette, "Boyhood"
- Keira Knightley, "The Imitation Game"
- Emma Stone, "Birdman"
- Meryl Streep, "Into the Woods"
- Naomi Watts, "St. Vincent"
How Naomi Watts managed to squeeze in over Jessica Chastain, Laura Dern or Anna Kendrick will never make sense to me. Actually, the women she jumped ahead of all star in films premiering in late December, and (much like "Selma") that seemed to hurt them with SAG. Streep's name is probably the only real reason she's present, as the rest of "Into the Woods" got the shaft (not even an ensemble nomination). That 5th slot will be up for grabs come Oscar time, and it'll be a fight between Chastain, Kendrick and Dern; whose film will play better for the Academy?
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture:
- "Birdman"
- "Boyhood"
- "The Grand Budapest Hotel"
- "The Imitation Game"
- "Theory of Everything"
I'm simply
groaning over "Theory of Everything"'s inclusion here, because outside of Redmayne and Jones, there's nothing noteworthy about the film,
especially its supporting cast???? That it made it in over "Into the Woods" or "Gone Girl" is actually a slap in the face. Happy for Wes Anderson, however, who may just finally get his first ever Best Picture nomination with the support from the actors (besides production design, the cast of Budapest Hotel is the strongest thing about the film, so its well deserved).
