Golden Globe Nominations

See the full list of Film nominees below.

Best Actress Performance by an Actress- Comedy/Musical:

  • Amy Adams, "Big Eyes"
  • Emily Blunt, "Into the Woods"
  • Helen Mirren, "100 Foot Journey"
  • Julianne Moore, "Maps to the Stars"
  • Quvenzhané Wallis, "Annie"
As much as I disliked "Annie", I'm thrilled Quevenzhané was recognized here; despite the film's many faults, she is not one of them (despite the fact she is prevented from actually acting or filling her songs with any real emotion, is not her fault). It's funny how Amy Adams, once a threat to win, has become such a non-factor in the Best Actress race. That once viable 5th slot seems to have slipped away from her, as has any hopes of winning this year. Also, really sad Jenny Slate didn't make the cut for her performance, which is one of the very best of the year.

Best Original Song- Motion Picture:

  • Big Eyes- Lana Del Rey, "Big Eyes"
  • Glory- John Legend, "Selma"
  • Mercy Is- Patti Smith, "Noah"
  • Opportunity- Sia, "Annie"
  • Yellow Flicker Beat- Lorde, "Mockingly: Part 1"
Best Original Score:
  • Johann Johansson, "The Theory of Everything"
  • Alexandre Desplat, "The Imitation Game"
  • Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, "Gone Girl"
  • Antonio Sanchez, "Birdman"
  • Hans Zimmer, "Interstellar"
Nice notices for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, one of my favorite scores of the year. Same for Antonio Sanchez, whose improvisatory score really adds so much to "Birdman".

Best Screenplay:
  • Richard Linklater, "Boyhood"
  • Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Nicholás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris & Armando Bo, "Birdman"
  • Graham Moore, "The Imitation Game"
  • Wes Anderson & Hugo Guinness, "The Grand Budapest Hotel"
  • Gillian Flynn, "Gone Girl"
Best Foreign Language Film:
  • "Ida"
  • "Tangerines"
  • "Leviathan"
  • "Force Majeure"
  • "Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem"
Best Animated Feature Film:
  • "How to Train Your Dragon 2"
  • "The Boxtrolls"
  • "The LEGO Movie"
  • "Big Hero 6"
  • "Book of Life"
Best Picture- Drama:
  • "Boyhood"
  • "Foxcatcher"
  • "The Imitation Game"
  • "Selma"
  • "The Theory of Everything"
"Selma" needed this after not being recognized by SAG yesterday (though we all know who is to take the blame for that), other than that pretty predictable list. The most surprising omission is "Unbroken". The HFPA love Angie (or at least they did?). Is this telling of its Oscar prospects? Expect all of these films to make the Best Picture cut at the Oscars.

Best Picture- Comedy/Musical:
  • "Birdman"
  • "The Grand Budapest Hotel"
  • "Into the Woods"
  • "Pride"
  • "St. Vincent"
Of these, only "Into the Woods", "Birdman" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" really have any shot at being recognized by Oscar, but good on "Pride" for getting some love here!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture- Drama:
  • Steve Carrell, "Foxcatcher"
  • Benedict Cumberbatch, "The Imitation Game"
  • Jake Gyllenhaal, "Nightcrawler"
  • David Oyelowo, "Selma"
  • Eddie Redmayne, "The Theory of Everything"
Someone benefitted from Michael Keaton being placed over in Comedy, though I don't know who I would swap out come Oscar time... of the 5, Carrell's film has the least heat/buzz, but "Nightcrawler" is such a small film that I could see Gyllenhaal being overlooked (despite being recognized by SAG). I think Oyelowo has this in the bag, though he could face some competition from Redmayne.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture- Comedy/Musical:

  • Ralph Fiennes, "The Grand Budapest Hotel"
  • Michael Keaton, "Birdman"
  • Bill Murray, "St. Vincent"
  • Joaquin Phoenix, "Inherent Vice"
  • Christoph Waltz, "Big Eyes"
Michael Keaton's award to lose, and a march towards Oscar I think unless "Selma" really picks up steam. (Why is Christoph Waltz here?)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture- Drama:
  • Jennifer Aniston, "Cake"
  • Felicity Jones, "The Theory of Everything"
  • Julianne Moore, "Still Alice"
  • Rosamund Pike, "Gone Girl"
  • Reese Witherspoon, "Wild"
Marion shut out again... really thought they would have bought into her work in "The Immigrant" (guess Weinstein dropped it too quickly). Still, Aniston has come on so strong in the last couple of days. SAG and Globe are a good combination to have, could she really get her first Oscar nod? The heat is with her for now, let's see how long she can hold onto it. This is still Moore's race; her march towards that long elusive Oscar.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture:
  • Patricia Arquette, "Boyhood"
  • Jessica Chastain, "A Most Violent Year"
  • Keira Knightley, "The Imitation Game"
  • Emma Stone, "Birdman"
  • Meryl Streep, "Into the Woods"
Seems like I should finally give up the notion that Anna Kendrick's raved about performance has any shot at Oscar; of the fringe contenders (Kendrick, Laura Dern, Jessica Chastain) it seems like the odds are in Chastain's favor, which make sense given the nature of the role.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture:
  • Robert Duvall, "The Judge"
  • Ethan Hawke, "Boyhood"
  • Edward Norton, "Birdman"
  • Mark Ruffalo, "Foxcatcher"
  • J.K. Simmons, "Whiplash"
Is Duvall really on track to be nominated for "The Judge"? *blegh*

Best Director- Motion Picture:
  • Wes Anderson, "The Grand Budapest Hotel"
  • Ava Duvernay, "Selma"
  • David Fincher, "Gone Girl"
  • Alejandro González Iñárritu, "Birdman"
  • Richard Linklater, "Boyhood"
YES AVA DUVERNAY. She's on track to make history, I'm so proud. Great to see some inspired choices like Anderson and Fincher here too; deserving recipients.
