Playing a down on his luck boxer, Gyllenhaal's character is a loose canon who is in danger of losing custody of his young daughter for good unless he can turn things around. The film also stars Academy Award winner Forrest Whitaker and Rachel McAdams as Gyllenhaal's wife.
Gyllenhaal was very very close to netting his second career Oscar nomination a few months ago for his incredible work in "Nightcrawler", which grabbed a Best Original Screenplay nomination. "Southpaw" has an unfriendly Oscar release date of July 31st, BUT is being distributed by none other than Harvey Weinstein.
"Warrior", a film about mixed martial arts, was able to nab star Nick Nolte an Oscar nomination back in 2011 for Supporting Actor despite having no buzz and being a box office failure. Gyllenhaal not only has star power, but has proven to be a box office draw; he carried "Nightcrawler" to almost $40 million against a budget of $8 million. Plus, with some Weinstein magic, Gyllenhaal could find himself back in the mix for Best Actor in the coming months. He's really proving himself as one of out most versatile actors, refusing to be typecast in a particular role.
