Variety reports that "Lost in Translation" and "The Bling Ring" director is in negotiations to direct the upcoming adaptation of the famous story.
Joe Wright was originally set to direct, however, opted out to direct the new adaptation of Pete Pan instead. Though nothing has been confirmed yet, this could be a very interesting take on a familiar story. Her visual aesthetic, I think, would compliment the story beautifully.
Coppola's films also always feature a female protagonist who is-- for lack of a better phrase-- a fish out of water (think Kirsten Dunst's Marie Antoinette, or Scar Jo's Charlotte, or even Katie Chang's Rebecca or Emma Watson's Nicki). I really hope she becomes the director, I think it would justify the creation of this movie, but produce a beautiful result.
The screenplay will be, reportedly, rewritten by Caroline Thompson after being penned by Kelly Marcel and Abi Morgan. No word on how it will compare to the animated Disney film, or the original source material; the depressing short story by Hans Christian Anderson. All I know is, I'm excited, are you?
