Written by Gillian Flynn (who also wrote the film's screenplay), the story focuses on a husband's search for his wife after she goes vanishing during their anniversary. All signs point to the husband being at fault, but all is not as it seems.
The source material explores the dynamic of the marriage (which is hinted at failing ) between Nick (played by Ben Affleck in the film) and Amy (Rosamund Pike in the film). The story switches between Nick's narration and excerpts from Amy's diary, both of which serve as unreliable narrators, shaking the story back and forth between fact and fiction.
Critics lauded the novel, but the ending was seen as slightly controversial. For the film, Fincher and Flynn are penning a new ending, and claim "the story will not be told in the same way as it was in the novel."
The trailer is trademark Fincher, and recalls his work on the film "Zodiac". Set to a creepily beautiful cover by Richard Butler of the song "She" by Elvis Costello from the movie "Notting Hill".
Gone Girl could very well be an Oscar contender. David Fincher is no stranger to Oscar, and many consider him to be overdue after losing to Tom Hooper in 2010 in the Best Director category. Ben Affleck is a 2 time Academy Award recipient (1 for writing, 1 for producing), and his acting looks good here.
Only time will tell if Gone Girl will be an Oscar player. The film will be released this Fall, on October 3rd. Watch the trailer below.
