A Spring Breakers Sequel is on the Way

Guy Lodge of inconention.com reports that a sequel to the polarizing indie hit will have a sequel.

The project will feature a combination of old and new members; Harmony Korrine (the original film's writer/director) and Selena Gomez will not be returning. The plot will feature the girls as "they declare war on a group of militant Christians out to rescue them from debauchery." It is unknown if fellow Spring Breakers (Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, or Rachel Korrine will have a part in the film).

The screenplay has been written by Irvine Welsh the author of the novel "Trainspotting" (the novel inspired the film directed by Danny Boyle, starring a pre-"Star Wars" Ewan McGregor) and directed by  Jonas Akerlund who has mainly worked on music videos for singers like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and U2.

The sequel will not be a direct sequel, rather, "there are some allusions to some of the characters in the original."

I was nowhere near a fan of the original Spring Breakers (though I did appreciate the editing, cinematography and 2 select scenes), and the news of a sequel has me rolling my eyes, especially since it's not a direct sequel. It seems like some sort of direct to DVD idea gone wrong, almost like "American Psycho 2".  However, my opinion doesn't really mean a whole lot as Spring Breakers made a lot of critics' top 10 lists, with star James Franco winning many Best Supporting Actor notices.
