Can Emma Stone Re-Capture "Easy A" Acclaim With Magic in the Moonlight?

A trailer for Woody Allen's follow-up to the wildly successful "Blue Jasmine" has landed! "Magic in the Moonlight" stars Collin Firth, Emma Stone, Marcia Gay Harden and Jacki Weaver.

The film focuses on a man (Firth) notorious for debunking myths. He is told that a young girl (Stone) has proclaimed herself to be a mystic, and charmed her way into living with a wealthy family, and sets out to prove she's a fraud. From the trailer, it seems that a romance begins to blossom between the two.

It's hard to ignore Woody Allen's most recent troubles, and the fact they will most likely impact the way this film is received; he has a target on his back for sure. What I can say now, however, is that this might be the film that challenges Emma Stone's very apparent gifts as an actress for the first time since her star making vehicle "Easy A" (for which she was most definitely robbed of an Oscar nomination).

For the past few years, Stone has been wallowing away in Spiderman land as Gwen Stacy, Spidey's girlfriend, and that's really all her purpose is. She's also had the displeasure of starring in some lackluster flicks ("Movie 43", "Gangster Squad") which really haven't capitalized on her talent.

Say what you will about Allen (and there is A LOT to say, don't get me wrong), but he gets very great performances from actors. From the trailer alone, Stone is more of a compelling and enthralling presence than she's been in the last 4 years she's been on the radar. Here's to hoping that my gut feeling is correct, as the film looks just as magical as Allen's "Midnight in Paris" but given Allen's track record, could be as messy as "To Rome With Love" or "You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger".

Take a look at the trailer below. Magic in the Moonlight will be released on July 25th.
