Golden Globe Nominations Announced

Julia Louis Dreyfus FINALLY gets some awards recognition this year for her performance in Enough Said.

The 71st Golden Globe Awards Nominations were announced early this morning. There were some surprises (good and bad) as always to keep things exciting. The full list of nominations is below.

Best Motion Picture- Drama:

  • 12 Years A Slave
  • Captain Phillips
  • Gravity
  • Philomena
  • Rush
I'm very shocked Rush landed a nomination here; after yesterdays surprise SAG nomination for Daniel Bruhl it seems that there's a larger support for that film than anyone had anticipated. I surely expected The Butler to at least make it here, but it seems like there's very little support for that film here, as it didn't show up anywhere on their long lists.

Best Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical:

  • American Hustle
  • Her
  • Llewyn Davis
  • Nebraska
  • Wolf of Wall Street
Pretty bummed about The Heat not making it in, but great news for Her, who I wasn't really anticipating have a strong presence here outside of Joaquin (but Comedy.... seriously???).

Best Actor in a Motion Picture- Drama:

  • Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years A Slave
  • Idris Elba, Madella: Long Walk to Freedom
  • Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips
  • Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
  • Robert Redford, All Is Lost
Idris Elba edged out Forest Whitaker! Sadly this is probably going to be the only recognition he gets this season. And Redford makes a bit of a comeback after being ignored by SAG yesterday. I'm sure it was easier for both of them having Bruce Dern and Leonardo DiCaprio over in the Comedy category.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture- Drama:

  • Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
  • Sandra Bullock, Gravity
  • Judi Dench, Philomena
  • Emma Thompson, Saving Mr. Banks
  • Kate Winslet, Labour Day
I had really hoped that Short Term 12's Brie Larson would make it in, but it seems the Globes went with their starry eyed intentions instead and nominated Kate Winslet from Labour Day, the Idris Elba of her group surely. Other than that..... yawn, saw this coming from a mile away.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical:

  • Christian Bale, American Hustle
  • Bruce Dern, Nebraska
  • Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
  • Oscar Isaac, Inside Llewyn Davis
  • Joaquin Phoenix, Her
My predictions were 5/5!

Best Actress in a Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical:

  • Amy Adams, American Hustle
  • Julie Delpy, Before Midnight
  • Julia Louis Dreyfus, Enough Said
  • Greta Gerwig, Frances Ha
  • Meryl Streep, August: Osage County
Disappointed for the ladies of The Heat, though their exclusion gave way for Julie Delpy and Greta Gerwig, two worthy nominees who have not seen very much success this season, so this is well deserved. At least Sandra Bullock has Gravity.

Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture:

  • Arkad Abdi, Captain Phillips
  • Daniel Bruhl, Rush
  • Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
  • Michael Fassbender, 12 Years A Slave
  • Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
I'm floored that Bruhl and Abdi have landed consecutive SAG and now Globe noms. Very surprising they made it in over Jonah Hill and Tom Hanks (I guess that Saving Mr. Banks nom isn't happening..). Cooper seems to have taken Gandolfini's spot, which is another surprise, but I guess not since they seemed to really like American Hustle.

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture:

  • Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine
  • Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
  • Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years A Slave
  • Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
  • June Squibb, Nebraska
NO OPRAH! That's incredible. Even if they didn't go for anything else I was sure Oprah was a lock. Very strange.... but nice to see Sally Hawkins here from the Cate Blanchett show. June Squibb was able to overcome the recognition problem and made it in. Ultimately this should be a cakewalk for Nyong'o to win.

Best Director:

  • Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
  • Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips
  • Steve McQueen, 12 Years A Slave
  • Alexander Payne, Nebraska
  • David O. Russell, American Hustle
Best Screenplay:
  • Spike Jonze, Her
  • Bob Nelson, Nebraska
  • Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope, Philomena
  • John Ridley, 12 Years A Slave
  • Eric Singer and David O. Russell, American Hustle
Best Foreign Language Film:
  • Blue Is the Warmest Color
  • The Great Beauty
  • The Hunt
  • The Past
  • The Wind Rises
Best Animated Feature:
  • Despicable Me 2
  • The Croods
  • Frozen
Original Song:
  • Atlas, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
  • Let It Go, Frozen
  • Ordinary Love, Mandella: Long Walk to Freedom
  • Please Mr. Kennedy, Inside Llewyn Davis
  • Sweeter Than Fiction, One Chance
Best Score:
  • Alex Ebert, All is Lost
  • Alex Heffes, Mandella: Long Walk to Freedom
  • Steven Price, Gravity
  • John Williams, The Book Thief
  • Hans Zimmer, 12 Years A Slave
