12 Years A Slave and American Hustle Win Best Picture at the Golden Globes

It was a big night for American Hustle; David O. Russell's "comedy" won 3 awards, including Best Picture.

After being shut out from every award it was nominated for, 12 Years A Slave came back with a Cinderella story win. "A bit of a surprise" admitted director Steve McQueen. After signs of slowing down from its frontrunner status, this puts a bunch of pep in the film's chances at taking it all home, or at least giving American Hustle a run for its money.

The rest of the races were filled with some surprises, and the usual "duhs". Check them out below.

Best Supporting Actress:

  • Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle

Front runner status is now awarded to last year's Best Actress champ. If she wins SAG and/or BAFTA it's a done deal. This is her second consecutive Golden Globe winning last year for Best Actress: Comedy or Musical.

Best Supporting TV Actress:

  • Jacqueline Bisset

Best Miniseries or TV Movie:

  • Behind the Candelabra

Best Actress: Miniseries or TV Movie:

  • Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake

Best Actor: TV Series Drama:

  • Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad

Best TV Series: Drama:
  • Breaking Bad
Best Score:
  • Alex Ebert, All Is Lost
Nice surprise! Deserving win. Such a great score that drives the film's intensity.
Best Original Song:
  • Ordinary Love, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
Frozen's "Let It Go" will still win the Oscar, there's no reason to worry. Bit of a shock it lost though... but I guess Bono was too big of an opportunity to pass up. They love their stars, plus they obviously loved Mandela (Actor + Picture noms).
Best Supporting Actor: Miniseries or TV Movie
  • John Voight, Ray Donovan
Best Actress: Musical or Comedy:

  • Amy Adams, American Hustle
I think this is her first major award she's ever won; after being nominated a million times for Supporting Actress, she's won a Leading Actress award. Oscar voting has been finished, so this isn't going to propel her into the Oscar Actress category, but it's a definite sign of strength for Hustle, which just keeps growing.

Best Actress: TV Drama:

  • Robin Wright, House of Cards
Best Supporting Actor:
  • Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
What else can I say? Completely deserved. SAG, BAFTA and Oscar are inevitable.

Best Screenplay:
  • Spike Jonze, Her
Best Actor: TV Series Comedy:
  • Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine Nine
Best Foreign Language Film:
  • The Great Beauty
Best Actor: Miniseries or TV Movie:
  • Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra
Best Animated Feature:
  • Frozen
Making up for its loss in Original Song, it's easily the favorite to win the Oscar

Best Actress: TV Series Comedy:

  • Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
This is a nice, deserved win for Poehler after she's lost to Tina Fey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for so long. Her work on the show is truly hilarious and nuanced.

Cecile B. DeMille Award:

  • Woody Allen
Best Director:
  • Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
He's won many of the precursor awards, and now the Globe is another trophy on his mantle. He's certainly the frontrunner as of now.

Best TV Series: Comedy:

  • Brooklyn Nine Nine
Best Actor: Comedy or Musical

  • Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
DiCaprio's first major award since he won for The Aviator. Though Oscar voting is already finished and this win has no bearing on his chances on being nominated, it'll be interesting to see if he ends up in the final 5 come Oscar time. That fifth slot is tricky

Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy:
  • American Hustle
After it's perfect guild showing, Hustle's win here definitely builds it's already large momentum with a win here. Don't let the "Comedy" genre fool you; plenty of Best Picture winners started off as Comedy winners in this category.

Best Actress: Motion Picture Drama:

  • Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
..... Duh
Best Actor: Motion Picture Drama:
  • Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
It seems that McConaughey has just snatched frontrunner status away from Chiwetel Ejifor. That, or the HFPA really doesn't like 12 Years A Slave. Either way, for the first time all season a true frontrunner in this category has emerged.

Best Motion Picture: Drama:

  • 12 Years A Slave
After a complete and utter shut out from everything else, 12 Years A Slave wins the big prize against Gravity. It needed this. It's now American Hustle's biggest competitor.
